When I was in junior high school I played football, wrestled, and ran track. However, when it was apparent that I wasn't going to grow past 5'7", I started to take my musical instrument and academics seriously. I marched in the band through the remainder of my high school years and did not pursue any more athletic activities. After three degrees (Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University), I found that I had gained weight. I got up to 185 pounds at one point and knew that I needed to get back in shape. While pursuing my doctoral studies at Syracuse, I began to take getting myself back in shape very seriously. I lifted heavy weights, combined different types of cardio, and watched my diet to get into really great shape. Depending on where I have been in my life, I've found it either more or less difficult to maintain my body. This most recent cycle of working out began in March of this year after approximately one year lay-off.
Why I Love It:
At my current age, 44 (September 3), the challenge is how much can I push myself and transform my body. Many people seem to think that after a certain age, it is impossible to get into top shape. I've never believed that.
How I Stay Motivated:
Simple, I want to look the best I can. I am also enjoying the challenge of challenging and changing my body by tweaking workouts, using novel exercises, and, having been on here since October 2008, I've enjoyed meeting focused, helpful supportive people who want to live better and get fit. Hopefully, I can motivate and help a few people as well.
Joining Bodyspace has been one of my BEST ONLINE EXPERIENCES thus far!
BB Accomplishments:
Finances and distance have prohibited my joining a gym and purchasing fitness equipment.
I've been accomplishing my latest fitness goals with two 30 pound dumbells, an exercise ball, a lot of bodyweight exercises, a newly installed pull-up bar, and a mixture of cardio. I work out 5 days per week. My workout rarely exceeds 90 minutes in length.
I am looking for people who have experience in bodyweight exercises and in using alternatives to standard weights. I use a lot of pushups (different positions), squats (with or without dumbbells, one-legged, etc.), Lunges, and other exercises.

I've been searching my archives to try and find a picture of me out of shape. I can't find those I took in March of this year when I started my fitness quest. But I felt it important to post this. Until recently, I let how my life was going impact how I took care of myself. I was in Syracuse at...

Goal (Long):
By June 2009, I wish to:
1. Have improved the size and shape of my chest.
2. Have improved the size and shape of my back.
3. Be at approximately 6-8% bodyfat.
4. Be able to display a "clean" six-pack (this is probably a "vanity" goal (See Goal #3).
5. Be able to complete at least 5 planche push-ups (View my progress pictures).
Description: This is my first attempt at any type of public video. Please excuse the quality. I am attempting to demonstrate some of the leg exercises that I use. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Description: Just doing some hanging leg raises. Trying out the video capture feature on the new camera and still breaking in my new pull-up bar. Nothing special. LOL! Still any feedback is appreciated.

Why I like this video: This young brother, a member of this site, got me inspired! Because I don't have much in the way of weights, I had looked all over for bodyweight exercises. For chest, I use a LOT of push-ups (view my workouts and/or bodyblog to see what I do). But when I saw this brother perform the planche push-up I felt had to master it and I will. Here he shows some exercises to do that will assist one in working up to the exercise!Thank you again sir!

Why I like this video: Bebeklein, a member of this site, shared rope jumping as another form of cardio. Anyone who visits this site knows that I'm into finding as many ways as possible to get into shape. Here is another cheap, effective way to go! Get moving!

I did my chest workout and really burned it good with the six sets of weighted push-ups. Hopefully, the results will begin to show soon. I did planche training and continue to be pleased with the results. I also did an abs superset with one set of exercises behind the other since I'm now...
Monday, January 5, 2009, begins my Eighth Six-Week Workout Cycle. Once again, I've done some tweaking to the workout. I dedicated one day each to working chest and back. I believe that I have not been working either part effectively because I had overloaded...
Man, things are pretty good over this way. Training too much, eating too much, sleeping enough, and well, I've got income so I can't complain too much.
No planche pushup over here though. I'm being a slacker in regards to that though.
You do any kettlebell training?
You are hardcore bro. You made all that progress without a gym. That takes major dedication. I like people around me. I couldn't workout by myself - which is evidenced by the tons of stuff in my basement collecting dust :)
Happy new year to U 2 MAB!!! My calves are getting more defined, but not really growing to the size of yours yet..lol I'm definately posting some new pics up for 09. I think I've made some good progress.
Same to you Andrew! My new year is off to a good start. I began lifting this week so we'll see how it goes. I'm really enjoying it so far. Have a great '09 man!
Ditto Andrew, hope your '09 is blessed. And I hope you make progress on the PhD so you can move on! I just get back from my morning w/o. Started off the day right. :)
I'm hoping for a San Diego loss, as well. Is that your property where you took your avi pic? Looks like a lot of land. You could build your own gym on it :)
