Welllll...to be honest I first lifted in college around 1987. But I always prioritized work over everything else in my life (dumb). So for 20 years I would get in the gym for a few months, then stay out for half a year or more. Over and over. In April 2006, just before I turned 41, I started back and stayed focused. I have been consistent about lifting, rest, and diet since then. And because I was *totally* out of shape at the time (about 290 lbs of flabby, no muscle self), I consider that my new starting point.
Why I Love It:
Lots of reasons! I like the sense of community among my gym buddies. The health benefits alone of fit versus obese are a great reward. They way I look is important (okay, I admit I can be vain).
How I Stay Motivated:
I have a network of gym buddies who take the sport seriously. I spend time on some boards--not a lot of time to spare. I read MD. I remember what being obese was like.

it actually is a bit different, on the this machine your feet are abit higher so that the pressure is constant especially at the top range of movement, where on the linear i felt it lighter once you got the weight past the 60 deg when pushing it up, i switched machines to the linear one this week, i felt it more on my quads and less on the hams, but the weight was the same.
Ha, yeah I get back to SEA in 5 days! I'm in North Dakota right now, way too cold. I appreciate the advice. Hope your enjoying the mountains, b/c its flat as hell out here and I miss them! Take care
Just saw that progress picture set you posted. With your size I would have thought you had been working out forever, it is good to see that with determination such tremendous progress is possible in the 40s.
